Philip Emde

Philip Emde (b. 1976, Mannheim, Germany) is an artist based in Cologne whose practice spans painting, installation, and artist books. He studied Drawing and Printmaking at the Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften, Hamburg, under Ellen Sturm and Jovica Veljovic (2000–2007). Emde’s work explores narrative, humor, and the absurdities of everyday life, blending playfulness with critical observation through irony, storytelling, and experimental visual strategies.

His work has been exhibited at institutions such as Kunsthalle Recklinghausen, Temporary Gallery Cologne, Kunstverein Braunschweig, and the Museum für Neue Kunst Freiburg, as well as in solo and group shows across Europe, the United States, and Asia. Emde’s works are held in collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York (Artist Book Collection), Tate Library, London, and the Xiao Museum of Contemporary Art, Rizhao, China. He has been recognized with awards and residencies such as the Rainer Funke Stiftung Prize (2018) and the Balmoral New York Fellowship (2013).
