  • At the intersection of Neo-Expressionism and Modern African Art, Lulama Wolf interrogates the pre-colonial African experience through the contemporary mind by using smearing, scraping, and deep pigment techniques that were used in vernacular architecture, and the patterns created largely by women to decorate traditional African homes.

  • Wolf’s depicted bodies indicate a world beyond themselves and signal towards broader themes and processes. Traversing both the personal and the political. She engages with themes of African spirituality within a contemporary context and merges that with colour theory influenced by traditional South African, vernacular architecture and indigenous rock art.

  • Nonzuzo Gxekwa's approach to photography favours the everyday over the spectacular; sharing intimate moments by focusing the camera on what is around her as well as on herself. Whether photographing in the street or in the studio, her work explores the human condition in subtle and beautiful ways.

  • Her optic is loving. It’s not simply that she chooses to focus on moments of self love—the way people occupy themselves—but that in the taking, her subjects are never wholly circumscribed. There is always space to manoeuvre.

  • About Talut Kareem

    About Talut Kareem

Talut Kareem (b. 1994) is a contemporary artist based in Lagos, Nigeria. He received his National Diploma in Mass Communication at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, and subsequently pursued a B.A. in Visual Art from the University of Lagos. His practice is rooted in drawing and painting, with painting being his primary form of expression.

Kareem creates richly detailed portraits by combining realistically rendered charcoal figures overlaid with bright colours and abstract patterns. By juxtaposing the monochrome of the charcoal with the colourful spherical shapes in the picture plane, he has developed a unique visual language, allowing him the freedom to explore figure composition, and further develop his narrative.

His practice centres around the transitory nature of our awareness, depicting the individual’s emotional and mental states – as well as larger patterns of social behaviour – while attempting to capture his own state of mind.

In 2021 Kareem was selected Self-Addressed, an exhibition of self-portraits by contemporary African artists curated by Kehinde Wiley. For this landmark exhibition, Wiley has invited a selection of contemporary African artists living throughout the world to each produce a self-portrait. Together these portraits will present a new exploration of identity, perception, and self-regard within the global stage. This exhitbion will be held at Jeffrey Deitch in Los Angeles, in November and December 2021, with gallery proceeds donated to Black Rock, Kehinde Wiley's residency in Senegal.

  • About Nonzuzo Gxekwa

    About Nonzuzo Gxekwa

Nonzuzo Gxekwa (b. 1981) is a Johannesburg based photographer. She captures life's little moments through photography, feeling most alive when creating and sharing things of beauty, she resonates most with Penn’s views on photography: ‎"It's about reacting to what you see, hopefully without preconception. You can find pictures anywhere. It's simply a matter of noticing things and organizing them. You just have to care about what's around you”.

As a self-taught photographer she is constantly growing and learning. She draws inspiration from observing the simple in everyday life and nature. Gxekwa’s photographs wrestle past and present as she captures the bricolage of city life. Her work contemplates the intricacies of a society reckoning with the past as it seeks to redefine its identity.

As Flurina Rothenberger writes: “Nonzuzo's work is characterized by an awareness of the deeply human that is woven into the structure of everyday urban life.”

Nonzuzo’s work was included in Presence: Five Contemporary African Photographers at the Photographer’s Gallery in London from July – August 2021. In November 2021 Nonzuzo was selected for Self-Addressed, organised by Kehinde Wiley and Jeffrey Deitch in Los Angeles. For this landmark exhibition, Wiley invited a selection of contemporary African artists to produce a self-portrait. Together these portraits presented a new exploration of identity, perception, and self-regard within the global stage.

In 2022 her collaborative work, The Mask Project will form part of the exhibition Hope from Chaos: Pandemic Reflections at the ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.
