Hella Berent (b. 1948, Thedinghausen, Germany) studied at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg and the University of Hamburg, and has been a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund since 2010. Her work, which spans drawing, artist books, sculpture, photography, video, text, and installation, has been shaped by extended stays in Southern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. She has exhibited widely in Europe, Asia, and the United States, with solo and group presentations at institutions including Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Neues Museum Weserburg in Bremen, Lenbachhaus in Munich, Kunstverein Leverkusen, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Esfahan, Iran. Her works are represented in public and private collections such as Museum Ludwig, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Neues Museum Weserburg, Lenbachhaus, Deutsche Bank, Villa Massimo, and Sammlung Hoffmann. Berent has been awarded numerous prizes and residencies, among them the Villa Massimo Scholarship in Rome, the Karl Hofer Prize in Berlin, and fellowships at the Djerassi Foundation and the FIH Field Institute.
