Über Den Zaun: THK Cologne

  •

THK’s seasonal gallery space is inaugurated with its first exhibition, Über den Zaun, set within a distinctive three-level gallery on a tree-lined street in Cologne’s gallery district. Launching a new chapter in our international program, the exhibition forms part of DC Open 2025, Düsseldorf and Cologne’s Gallery Weekend, and is presented in collaboration with DOD Gallery.

Seventeen artists—Béla Pablo Janssen, Boscher Theodor, Dragutin Banić, Filip Henin, Gert & Uwe Tobias, Hella Berent, Marco Zumbé, Philip Emde, Ralph Schuster, Sarah Szczesny, Sophia Domagala, Stefanie Popp, Thomas Wachholz, Thomas Arnolds, Ulrich Pester, and Wolfgang Voegele—offer a vivid snapshot of Cologne’s contemporary scene.

Exploring the fence as both boundary and bridge, Über den Zaun invites visitors to cross literal and symbolic borders, revealing spaces where histories meet, identities intertwine, and the line between self and collective begins to blur.

  • Across fences and oceans, Über den Zaun enacts kinship as a lived, unruly practice of care and creation.

  • In his essay, Lars Fleischmann explores Über den Zaun as an enactment of Benjamin’s reflections on fences. For Benjamin, fences separate but also provoke, offering a moment to see differently. Fleischmann frames the exhibition as a series of such provocations, where artists extend beyond boundaries of genre, medium, and geography to reveal what is often hidden from view.

He highlights the exhibition’s role as a passageway, one that allows viewers to encounter the “optical unconscious” through attentive observation and engagement. The works encourage a careful negotiation of boundaries, turning division into opportunity and challenge into fascination.

Through Fleischmann’s writing, Über den Zaun becomes more than an exhibition: it is a space where seeing is active, where thresholds are celebrated, and where the fence itself transforms from a barrier into a portal for exploration and wonder.
